Pilates is a system of exercises to strengthen and stretch the body and improve tone and posture.
The muscles are worked in both their contracted and elongated state, avoiding the ′bulking′ effect which is so often the result of traditional gym exercise. Pilates works the full length of the muscle, creating long lean muscles. On the Reformer, the resistance provided by the movement of the springs closely resembles muscular contraction, and allows for specific targeting of the muscles in the legs, bottom and upper body. Pilates increases flexibility and strength while balancing the muscles so that no one group gets overbuilt or overtrained.
Back pain - Many clients of Cheltenham Pilates find relief from back and neck pain in just a few sessions as their core strength and awareness improves. Two 2006 studies (of 53 and 26 back-pain sufferers) indicated that Pilates can be more effective than the standard treatments for chronic pain.
Private sessions are recommended initially for those with specific health issues to address before considering moving into a class.
